Fence posts
Choose a post about 600mm longer than your fence is tall, so there's enough in the ground. Most Newcastle gardens are well served by 4x3.

Picking a post length
| Fence height | Post length | Section |
|---|---|---|
| 0.9m | 1.5m | 3x3 |
| 1.2m | 1.8m | 3x3 or 4x3 |
| 1.5m | 2.1m | 4x3 |
| 1.8m | 2.4m | 4x3, or 4x4 if it's windy |
| 2.1m to 2.4m | 3m | 4x3 or 4x4 |
Gates need a 6x6 post on the hinge side.
Which section?
3x3 is light and suits low fences in sheltered spots. 4x3 is the all-rounder for back gardens. 4x4 gives extra stiffness at corners, at the ends of runs, and on open plots near the coast.
Questions
How deep should a post go?
Around 600mm in the ground is a good guide for a garden fence, a bit more on soft ground or for tall fences.
How many bags of post mix per post?
Allow a bag per 3x3 or 4x3, double that for 4x4, and a little extra for gate posts.
