Fence calculator
How much fencing timber do I need?
Tell us the length and height of your fence and we'll list every piece for a closeboard-style run, priced up and ready to drop in your basket.
Work out your fence
For one straight run. Do each side of the garden separately if they're different heights.
What the calculator assumes
| Part | How it's worked out |
|---|---|
| Posts | Spaced at 1.8m, with an extra post to close the run, each about 600mm longer than the fence is high |
| Rails | 2 rows for fences to 1.2m, otherwise 3; fences of 2.1m and taller use 4x2 |
| Boards | 150mm boards butted together, the same length as the fence height |
| Gravel boards | One 3.6m board for every two bays |
| Post mix | One bag per post, two for 4x4 |
Worth adding yourself
- A 6x6 gate post for a side or back-lane gate.
- Extra posts where the run turns a corner.
- A few spare boards for offcuts and any that split while fixing.
Questions
Does it work for sloping gardens?
It gives a good starting list. On a slope, fences are usually stepped, so you may want a longer post where each step drops down.
Can I change the list?
Yes. Once it's in your basket you can change any quantity or remove a line.
Got your measurements?
Add your timber to the basket and you'll see the delivered price before paying. Orders start at £200.00 of timber.
